debian didn't come with gdebi (atleast i don't think so) and installing software from deb packages is a bit of a hassle i get tired of going through command line (plus i read that gdebi automatically downloads the dependancies if needed) i am using the debian install dvd which has more packages on it but i don't think gdebi is included
wheres the window that pops up to install the deb package like it does in ubuntu
I'm guessing you mean in the right-click menu when you highlight a *.deb file in a file manager?
I've been getting "Install with gdebi" in my right-click in Nautilus, but I don't get it in Konqueror, probably because I installed Konqueror first and a I need to go back and update the file associations. (Seconds later) Yep. That was it.
You might check the file associations in the file manager you are using.
You can run gdebi from the command line: gdebi [filename]. Run as root for a global install.
Actually, I was able to enable the package in Konqueror-->Settings-->Configure Konqueror-->File Associations-->Applications-->x-deb and x-debian package.
When I clicked the file extensions, "Archive Manager" was at the top in the "Application Preference Order" box, but Gdebi was also in the list. I simply moved Gdebi to the top.
I could have also, I guess, right-clicked a *.deb and selected Open with-->Other Application, then selected /usr/bin/gdedi and checked the "Remember association" checkbox.
This is Debian Lenny with Koqueror 3.5.x.
The Konqueror 4.5.x on my Ubuntu 10.10 box includes the "Ubuntu Software Center" in the right-click menu without my intervention.
Sidenote: Be aware that Debian and Ubuntu are not binary compatible, so installing .deb-packages on a system that it is not build for can mess up your system.
