How do you find certain packages in apt.

I want to install the kernel version 2.6.9. I have only recently installed debian and have no real idea on how to find it. Can someone help me with this? Thanks in advance for your help.

apt-cache search kernel-image-2.6.9

and pick the one that's appropriate for your system

the kernel version 2.6.9 doesn't seem to be found. I think I'm searching testing as thats what I set apt to. What do I do to search unstable? Thats where I'm guessing this kernel version is.

You might have better luck just doing apt-cache search kernel-image to see which kernels are available for installation from your current cache.

To search the unstable tree, first change your /etc/apt/sources.list to something like:
deb ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ unstable contrib main non-free

Then run apt-get update which will download just the package names in those unstable, contrib, main, and non-free trees.

Then when you re-run apt-cache search <package-name> you'll see which packages are now in your apt-cache.

I'm using an athlon XP 2500+, is this the right kernel to use?
kernel-image-2.6.9-2-k7 - Linux kernel image for version 2.6.9 on AMD K7.
Thanks in advance for your help.

edit: nevermind about this, I wanted to install the sources anyway, I was mixed up.
