How do you create a .deb file / get it into repositories?

Hey all,

I wrote a bit torrent program last semester for one of my classes and I've been working on it for the past 8 months or so. At this point it works fairly well and I'd kind of like to learn how to package it into a .deb file so I can share it with others.

Getting it into the repositories would be cool, but mostly I just want to get it into a .deb at this point.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Give checkinstall a try. It will make you a .deb for your application

Building Debian packages, example links containing other links

If your application turns out to be very popular world wide,
it may even be considered by the Debian people to be included
in a repo.

Thanks for the tips.

I finally got everything put together today. I'm sure its not 100% how its supposed to be, but I've used the package to install the program on 3 different computers so far and it succeeded on each. So that seems like a plus.

If anyone would like to take a look at it I'd be happy to email it out.

Just submit it to the Debian dev's. Tell them why you wrote the program, how the code works (assume a fair knowledge of coding on the part of the reader though ;-)) and if it has something special to offer (like an easy way of learning to code). Write and include documentation for your application, include that in your submission. It'll show you've learned to code properly (code w/o doc's is considered lousy coding and has a virtually guaranteed 0.0% chance of getting included) and thus increases your chances of being accepted. Best of luck chap :-)
