hosts file location
 

Can someone tell me where the local hosts file sits on debian. I've checked /etc/hosts but nothing is there.

This system is run by my datacenter, so it could be a non standard install (in which case i'll keep looking)

The hosts file should reside in /etc. This is true for all linux/unix flavors. Some have a link in /etc that points to the real hosts file (Sun Solaris, to name just one). I'm not aware of any linux distro's that do this (linking).

All programs that need the hosts file look in /etc.
