help with libncurses.

Hi, I'm trying to do make menuconfig because I'm recompiling my kernel and it says I need libncurses5-dev, so I download it and use dpkg -i /mnt/sda1/libncurses5-dev.deb to install the package but dpkg says I need a version of libncurses earlier than the one I have. what do I need to do? I have libncurses 5.4, I need libncurses 5.2.

So you're running Woody (stable) and you don't have a network connection from your Debian box? (If you had a working network connection, you could simply do "apt-get install libncurses5-dev".)

Well, the libncurses5-dev package that you downloaded appears to be from testing or unstable Debian repository. You probably need to download it again, this time using stable Debian repository. Hope this helps.

Perhaps the exact error message would bring some light to this mystery? Frankly, I cannot imagine why dpkg would say that you need an earlier version of libncurses in order to install a later version of libncurses5-dev.

You could go to http://snapshot.debian.net for an earlier version and get one that matches what you need.

Code:
libncurses5-dev depends on libncurses5 (= 5.2.20020112a-7); however: version of libncurses is 5.4-4.

Perhaps this would help?

http://packages.debian.org/stable/base/libncurses5

Edit:

On second thought, uninstall the libncurses5-dev package you installed earlier and install this instead:

http://packages.debian.org/testing/l...ibncurses5-dev
