Unhappy hda unmountable in Etch

Hi All,
Unsure wether to post this in hardware or here, but as being as it's etch im using, here goes!

I've still got my learner plates on here, so please bear with me !

When trying to browse /hda with W*&doze XP on it, via the "Computer" icon on the Gnome desktop, I'm getting the error:

libhal-storage.c 1401 : info: called libhal_free_dbus_error but dbuserror was not set.

process 4412: applications must not close shared connections - see dbus_connection_close() docs. this is a bug in the application.

error: device /dev/hda1 is not removable

error: could not execute pmount

The XP partition is in FAT32.

I'm running Etch with the 2.6.17-2-k7 kernel on an AMD Sempron 2800+, 512Mb, 128Mb MSI graphics card.
I want to be able to transfer some files between the two OS's, and have done this before with different OS's on other machines, but not this one. I am running Reiserfs on both home and root partitions. I have also highlighted a couple of lines in my dmesg output, but these are to do with hdc and not hda!

/home/dave# dmesg

What happens when you run the following from the shell (as root):
Code:
mkdir /mnt/fat32 ; mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/fat32

Ahhhh!!! Something magical happens! File browser has opened! However, I cannot seem to be able to write a document to it. How do I change the permissions on that drive to be able to read / write to it?

You are the font of all knowledge! THANK YOU!

Try adding this line to your /etc/fstab (as root)

Code:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/fat32 vfat users,defaults,umask=000 0 0
That's if you want to always mount it at boot. If you don't, add 'noauto' to the option field. Then when you want to mount it, just do 'mount /mnt/fat32' ...

Thanks eerok! That worked a treat!
Last question though.......
Which group do I need to set the user account to, to be able to access the drive without having to use the above command all of the time?

Cheers Guys!

If that line is in your /etc/fstab, you don't need to do anything more to access that partition. If you use 'noauto' you'll have to explicitly mount it no matter what group you're in; if you mount it at boot, then there it is.
