having trouble installing debian on external usb harddrive
Hi @ all,
Im trying to install debian linux on my external usb harddisk, on my own machine, it seems to be running. but if i plug in the harddisk at school, it wont start. i tried to make an initrd with the modules "sd_mod ehci_hcd ohci_hcd uhci_hcd usb-storage" and with a DELAY of 10 seconds. on my own computer it starts without giving any errors, but when i go to school and plug my harddisk in the computer it always give me the same error. you can see the error message here: http://willigirard.dyndns.org/pics/errormessage.jpg So my question is, must i load other modules in my initrd, or whats wrong in my configuration? i searched for hours in the internet, but found nothing to fix this error. i made the whole with a standard kernel 2.6.8-2-686-smp and with one i compiled on my own, it was a 2.6.13.3. thanks for any solutions! willigi |
Simple hardware differences. Installing Debian on an external harddrive doesn't make it a Live HDD. Not everything is modules.
If you want to boot linux on a different pc use a live cd (or dvd) like Knoppix. |
thanks for resopnding... yeah the normal method of my school is booting from a CD, and starting a VMware and work with different windows and linux. but i want to install additional programms and some other stuff. but with a CD its impossible..!
so is there the possibility to make something like a live HDD? why i cant load the modules of my school computer so its possible to boot at home and at school? thanks for all! |
Well I don't know about a live HDD. I do know that the latest Knoppix dvd is packed with software and that it is possible to build your own Knoppix live cd/dvd with the software of your choice.
Chekc the knoppix site for howto's. |
okay... i'll try it...
thanks a lot |
