i get the following message when trying to install a recompiled kernel....everything is fine until area in red below

I'm by no means fluent in linux yet, however I have fixed a number of both grub problems as well as mbr troubles using supergrub... http://supergrub.forjamari.linex.org/ Good Luck! Dan

thanks but I reverted back to grub from testing and now everything works fine..
there are a few bugs reports on grub from sid (unstable) and until they are worked out i can surivew

If you don't already have it, I highly recommend you install apt-listbugs. Definitely helps to avoid issues like this. :-)
