Greeting screen keeps crashing.
Hello all.
I am having a great time working Debian Sarge 3.1 but a rather annoying problem happened last night. After doing some writing in OpenOffice and then booting out I need to go back in so after switching on and Debian going through the bootup process it gets to the Greeting screen which then gives me a KDE message: KDEGreeting has crashed using signal 11. After closing the error box it switches the whole screen to the Command Line. I login and type StartX but nothing, typicaly freezing. I usually use Gnome so should I completely uninstall KDE. Hope you can help. Kind regards |
Yeah, I suppose if you don't use KDE, then you could simply delete it to be replaced with Gnome with your favorite package manager (Aptitude/Tasksel or whatever else you use).
Change the login manager to GDM (see if that helps) or XDM or even the old fashioned text terminal if all fails. |
Thanks for the advice.
From the text terminal I managed to delete KDE and KDM then installed GDM after I was able to get back in and from Synaptics I am uninstalling everything to do with KDE. It is so good not to have to re-install the whole system again. Again thanks for your advice. It worked a treat. Kind regards |
