Google Earth & libc 2.4 dependency

NuB here,
Dual Boot Kubuntu 6.06 / XP on Compaq Presario M2000.

Quick (I hope) question, that I can't seem to find asked anywhere else:

Is it possible / adviseable to upgrade libc 2.3.6 (which came w/ the distro) to 2.4 (new to Edgy), & if so ,how? It satisfies a dependency for Google Earth (which ran fine over on the Win partition).

Would very much like to EXT3 that partition altogether...

I used that libc during the Etch freeze (well 2.5-experimental.) It might still work, but remember that this a core package and by its description "Contains the standard libraries that are used by nearly all programs on
the system"

I once uninstalled it, ignoring the warning because I was having troubles downgrading and found myself with an almost useless system. Even dpkg failed to work.

Thank you for the quick reply! I'm afraid some of it went right over my head, though.

I don't know what Etch is, and I don't want to uninstall libc, I'd just like to replace 2.3.6 w/ 2.4 w/out upgrading Kubuntu. -I'd rather wait until 7.04 has a few more miles on it, or the support for 6.06 runs out, whichever requires less effort on my part.

-Or do I have to get rid of one before installing the other? -And if dpkg doesn't work afterward, how will that affect Adept?

Etch is the latest version of Debian. You are in the Debian forum, so we talk about Etch alot. You would probably have better results in the Ubuntu forum, but most of what we have to say should be relevant...

Again, I appreciate your posts, and have no doubt what said here is relevant because I don't have nearly the level of knowledge you guys do.

I'm also not getting any closer to a high level of understanding because there is only rarely such a thing as a straight answer in these forums.

I have a great deal of respect for the years you've all spent w/ the OS, and the quantities of knowledge you've accumulated certainly approaches the esoteric. Unfortunately, esoterics are no substitute for simple "yes" or "no," much less a line or two of "here's how," for a self-proclaimed newbie.

Sorry to have disturbed you, I will go to the Ubuntu people as per your request.

You don't need to go to the Ubuntu forums for someone to tell you that you certainly could upgrade libc6, but without upgrading the rest of the system, you may run into some serious stability problems. Some programs may become unusable.

You could always run 7.04 alongside 6.06. I can't see it being too hard (However for advise on this you probably will need to head to the Ubuntu forums)

Thanks, Daws.

As it happens, someone from the 'buntu forums just chimed in w/ the same stability questions, and recommends I go ahead and run Fiesty, but as a VM under Dapper.

Google earth doesn't mean so much to me as K6.06 long-term suport.

Again, thank you.
