gnome won't logout or shutdown properly

When I try to logout or shutdown from gnome it just goes to a blank screen and I have to press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE repeatedly to get it to go to a login prompt so I can shutdown. I'm running debian sarge with 2.2.20-idepci kernel.

Would appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you,
