Probably has something to do with why it's called 'unstable.' Sid is unusually delicate these days because of major changes in Xorg and Gnome. My suggestion would be to try another dist-upgrade in a day or two and see if a fix has appeared.

im also having this problem on debian etch after installing kdebase

----------------------
edit: I just removed all of the packages that were added when I install kdebase and now my menu is fixed.

Also if you install gtk-qt it screwes up gnome when you log into it until you remove it.

I had the same problem. Go into synaptic and reinstall "gnome-panel". That fixed it for me.

try opening up a terminal and as root type update-menus and then as a regulare user type update-menus. Then log out and log back in a see if that fixes it.

I have the same problem with my panel (running Sarge). Can't reduce applications, they disappear and do not appear on panel.
