Gnome for a NewBie
 

Hey there... hey I need a quick help.... how can I install gnome 2.8 ? witch patchs do I need to install and where can I get it fro using apt?

If you switch to the unstable branch of debian, you can just apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and you will be running GNOME 2.8 ;)

Even if I don´t have any gnome version installed??? how do I switch it??? I know it is stupd question... but... I start with lunix makes 2 weeks, so, I don´t Know that much!!! :)

what are you running? woody(stable)? sarge(testing)? sid(unstable)?

sarge and sid have gnome 2.8, you just have to type

apt-get install gnome

I hope you're not on dialup tho....

No I´m not on dialup! i´m running woody stable.

is there any source I can use to intall it trougth apt-get????

open the file /etc/apt/sources.list

and replace all instance of stable with testing, then save

now do apt-get update and then apt-get install gnome.

(testing is soon to be released as stable)
