You shouldn't need to. If you mean on the taskbar, you should be able to right click it and select adjust time/date.

Hi,

Right click -> adjust time and date

popup following warning:

Failed to locate a program for configuring the date and time. Perhaps none is installed?

I have no idea which program is needed. There is no problem to adjust date and time on KDE desktop.

Beside creating an icon on KDE desktop will automatcally generate its image on GNOME deskop but the latter can't work, such as

Floppy
CDRom
CDWriter

I can't remove them from GNOME desktop otherwise their icons on KDE desktop will be removed automatically.

Kindly advise how to fix this problem.

TIA

Hi,

Sorry I don't follow your advice.

I just got GNOME 2.4 started after nearly a whole week of hard work. KDE is working without much problem. I am now trying to setup/config GNOME desktop but met some problems. Yes, I will use GNOME desktop after it has been setup properly.

But now I need advice on how to solve my problem mentioned in my previous posting.

Thanks

B.R.

I'd advise using ntp . It will keep correct time for you.

As far as gnome/kde icons and such. I don't use em so I wouldn't have a clue

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

Just have
# apt-get install ntp

# whereis ntp
ntp: /etc/ntp.conf

# cat /etc/ntp.conf
only an empty file.

# which ntp
no printout

# man ntp
No manual entry for ntp

Kindly advise how to get ntp to run? Where can I find relevant doc?

My Debian box, a workstation, connects to Internet via broadband with dynamic IP.

TIA

/etc/ntp.conf only needs to contain the server information as show here. Only contains one line like this

Code:
server foo.bar.com
You can find a server close to you here.

There's a bunch of em so you'll have to weed through them to find one in your time zone.

Once you have everything configured you just have to start ntp with /etc/init.d/ntpdate start (I believe, I'm not at my deb box right now)

If all else fails... ntp's homepage --> www.ntp.org

Install ntp-simple, then it should prompt you to answer the questions it needs to set you up for NTP and it will make it run the NTP daemon when you boot.

Hi,

GNOME 2.4
=======

Thanks for your advice.

Something strange found as follows;

# apt-get install ntp-simple
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
ntp-simple is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 57 not upgraded.

# which ntp-simple
# whereis ntp-simple
# whereis ntpsimple
# which ntpsimple
all no printout

# /etc/init.d/ntpdate start
-su: /etc/init.d/ntpdate: No such file or directory

# which ntpdate
# whereis ntpdate
# find / -name ntpdate
all no printout

# /etc/init.d/ntp-simple start
Starting NTP server: ntpd.
Nothing happened, no questions popup for answering

# find / -name ntp-simple.conf
no printout

# find / -name ntp.conf
/etc/ntp.conf
/var/cache/setup-tool-backends/backup/time/First/etc/ntp.conf
/var/cache/setup-tool-backends/backup/time/1/etc/ntp.conf
/var/cache/setup-tool-backends/backup/time/2/etc/ntp.conf
/var/cache/setup-tool-backends/backup/time/3/etc/ntp.conf

I read those files with 'nano' and found all empty

Any advice?

TIA
