Gimp 2.8.0: Send by email: How to get it to work on Debian Linux

I'm using Gimp 2.8.0 on Debian Linux. I need to be able to quickly take a screenshot of a specific part of the screen, which Gimp performs nicely, but then when I select File > Send by Email, and fill out the form to send it to my email address, it completes but gives no error on screen that it had any problems sending the email. I looked on the terminal window and saw no standard output or standard error messaging indicating that it had a problem. Yet I did not receive the email after a while.

What can I do to figure out if this is a Gimp problem or something misconfigured in my system?

Answers that really aren't answers in this context:

  1. Use gnome-screenshot.
  2. Read Gimp source code.

For reference here is the sources.list file showing what level of Debian I'm on:

Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
#

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux wheezy-DI-a1 _Wheezy_ - Official Snapshot amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20120512-00:39]/ wheezy main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux wheezy-DI-a1 _Wheezy_ - Official Snapshot amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20120512-00:39]/ wheezy main

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main

deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main

cat /etc/debian_version
wheezy/sid

you need to have a MTA set up properly.
Gimp uses sendmail to send emails.
You can try in a terminal to send an email to yourself and see if it works :

Code:
sendmail me@myhoster.com <push enter>
Just a test message <push enter>>
. <push enter, mail should get send>
The . (point) on a line itself is important to tell sendmail to send the mail.
By the way it is better to install e.g. postfix and configure it in a way that it would relay the mail to your hosters smtp server, as most mailserver refuse to talk to sendmail if you are on dynamic IP (like ADSL) or you don't have a proper reverse DNS record for your IP .

There is a thread about htis here (but it doesn't say much more) :

I'll check that out later on this week when I have a chance to dig into it some more. Thanks heinblöd.

During software development, I need to take a snapshot of part of the screen, and report an issue to someone typically by email. I know that I can do this by exporting to a PNG and opening up a separate mail client and sending it, but having it built-in to Gimp reduces the sequence of steps I have to do.
