Getting a GUI to work

Hey guys,

A while back I installed the newest stable verison of debian on my computer, and it worked pretty well. The only problem was that I couldn't get into anything that was gui-ish it was only command prompt. I am sure I put KDE and Gnome or one of them on the computer. But it still wouldn't go anywhere.

What are the commands I need to get a GUI?

Thanks for any help!!

if you have installed Gnome or KDE as you said, then try running startx to launch X

even though you have installed KDE and Gnome, are you sure you installed the x windowing system? My first time installing Debian, I just installed the desktop environment I was looking for at the time and forgot to install X.

If you havent' installed X, type apt-get install x-window-system and that should do the trick for you. After you've done that and configured everything you should be able to load your environment of choice.
