Question gdm won't come up after kernel upgrade


I'm running Lenny with the default kernel 2.6.26. I recently got a wireless card supported by the ath9k driver, so I followed the instructions on this site:

which had me install a 2.6.32 kernel image from lenny-backports. Everything installed fine without errors, but when I rebooted after the install, after the kernel messages scrolled by and the screen would normally switch to the gdm login screen, all I got was a blank screen with some distorted squares. I used Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switched to a shell and everything looked fine, but when I Ctrl-Alt-F7ed back to X, I got another black screen with distorted images. Any idea what could have caused this from the kernel upgrade, and what I can do?

What is your vga? If its an ati or an nvidia, did you install the relevant closed source drivers using module assistant? Then you will have to do it again.

again and it installed a few packages, but I still get the same errors and symptoms as before when trying to restart gdm.

Just a sec.

Assuming you are on ati and fglrx 8.12 that is contained on the stable repo.
That fgrlx does not build with 2.6.32 (new kernel vs old closed source driver), so you will have to get fglrx 10.4 from the backports repo as well.

As I see on the other thread, you are on an 4350, so fglrx will get your work done.
If you were on X1xxx or older, things would be messy.

Ok. Would you mind telling me exactly which packages I need to install? I tried installing a bunch of modules from fglrx-driver, fglrx-modules, etc. from lenny-backports, but I don't really understand how all those things work together so I don't really know what I'm doing. Thanks again.

In plain commands, assuming you have the backports repo enabled

Remove anything flgrx related first, to make a clean start (not sure if the wildcard (*) there works)
Code:
apt-get autoremove fglrx-*
Install the relevant packages, and let dkms do its build (new way)
Code:
apt-get install fglrx-driver fglrx-modules-dkms
OR

Go the old way of module-assistant
Code:
apt-get install fglrx-source
m-a prepare
m-a a-i fglrx-source
Plus, regardless of what you chose above, install the package for 3d
Code:
apt-get install fglrx-glx

Just noticed that all the above packages of backports repo are for i386. Maybe make a request if you are on amd64?

Thanks for the instructions. However, I tried both of your suggestions above and neither worked (same fglrx errors and gdm comes up with distorted shapes). Both times I removed all fglrx-related packages beforehand. I also went back to the link I originally used (see above), and tried following the instructions for stable, testing, and unstable (removing all fglrx packages in between), and none of those worked either. For your instructions and the page's non-stable instructions I was using "-t lenny-backports" for everything. Here's the relevant portions of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Any idea what's going on here?

Are you sure the fglrx kernel module was built for your current kernel? What's the output of 'modinfo fglrx'?

Here it is. By the way, I wound up installing madwifi so that my network card could be supported without needing ath9k, but I'd still like to fix this issue (I'll need to upgrade my kernel eventually if not now...).

Check the versions for the kernel module and the Xorg modules. The kernel module is at 8.72.5 and the Xorg module is at 8.56.4. This just won't work.

My suggestion would be to completely uninstall any and all versions of fglrx, including any kernel modules that might be left, and then reinstall fglrx.

Every time I test anything with this, I first uninstall all fglrx-related modules with:

aptitude remove '~nfglrx'
And then reinstall through the instructions at the first site I linked to above. I did that right before I tried your modinfo and dmesg suggestions. Is there something else I need to do to make sure everything is uninstalled? Is it building the module for the old kernel (2.6.26) instead of the new backports one (2.6.32) that I'm running for some reason?

It should not matter which kernel you build the module for as long as the module builds. Once you uninstall fglrx, make sure the kernel module is really gone by searching for any versions of it with this command:

find /lib/modules/ -iname fglrx.ko

I'm willing to bet that something is left over.

I'm afraid that shows no matches. I also tried "aptitude search fglrx" and every package is listed as either p, v, or c.
