Gdebi Package Installer crashes

Whenever I try to install a .deb file, the installer crashes. (Synaptic works fine and so does apt-get) This is very frustrating as I would like to install software not available in the repositories.

Please help.

Theres not a lot of software that isn't in the repositories... what exactly are you trying to install ? might be a better place to start.

Older versions of wine because the one that comes with lenny crashes on my system..

Is there a command to install .deb files with the terminal? Because I really don't care about GUI.
