Unstable is the status of a Debian release when packages can be added to the system at any time that might disrupt the integrity of the whole system!
Welcome to Sid :o)

Just don't upgrade it yet. BTW I think it'll be hard to install anyway as there are missing some dependencies in the repository so gaim is getting kept back for me.

Remove GAIM and reinstall it with autopackage, you can find it on GAIM Download section.
It's very easy...from console run "bash name.package"...and wait...

<strike>Btw is it gaim + kde or are you trying to upgrade other packages as well. If I just install gaim it'll give a broken dependencie but the whole upgrade (this is just an example of a package that should be upgraded out of the list):
Quote:
root@debian:~# apt-get install xutils
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
libfs6 rsh-client rsh-server
Suggested packages:
ssh
The following packages will be REMOVED:
ark firestarter gksu kdelibs-bin kdelibs4 kfilereplace klinkstatus kommander
kxsldbg libcvsservice0 libgksu1.2-0 libgksuui1.0-0 quanta wine xbase-clients
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libfs6 rsh-client rsh-server
The following packages will be upgraded:
xutils
1 upgraded, 3 newly installed, 15 to remove and 14 not upgraded.
Need to get 1162kB of archives.
After unpacking 49.5MB disk space will be freed.

</strike>
It looks like the libaspell is the culprit. I downloaded the version needed for gaim available on packages.debian.org and it wants to uninstall libaspell. Kde depends on libaspell

Yea, i've been using sid for a few years. This kinda stuff happens. Its worth it for the newest software even though it does bug me.
Autopackage always seemed kinda cheezy to me. I'l deal with an older version of KDE and keep GAIM on apt. APT is the main reason i stick with Debian and the last thing i wanna manage is heeping track of program versions.

Validius - you can just subscribe to the gaim project at Freshmeat. The autopackage will always be up to date as it's done by a Gaim developer. That way you'll get an email when there is a new version out, and you can decide if you want to download it or not.
