fonts in debian and gnome

I'm a little bit confused with fonts in debian and gnome. I just want that Gnome recognize the terminus font. For that I read, Gnome uses the fontconfig, so I gave up from my attempts with the X font server. One thing that makes me confused is Defoma, and all the Desktop system depends on it. Anyone could explain me the process to make the terminus font available in Gnome?
