font on azureus replaced by boxes

running debian stable
azureus 2.5.0.4
java -version
java version "1.5.0_11"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_11-b03, mixed mode, sharing)

Some of the text on the toolbar in azureus is not text, but boxes with four numbers in it, one number in each corner. How can I get text instead of asci codes in azuereus. It ran fine for awhile but after the last update I got this problem. I updated java but still had the issue.
It's not a show stopper, but please help.
Thanks.
