Flavors of Debian

What is the differences between the flavors, I couldn't find a FAQ to it, would someone be nice enough to provide me with the informations?
And whats the differences between Mepis and Debian, is Mepis just an easier installation of Debian?

The current scenario;
Woody = stable - no known bugs in the packages and therefore stable.
Sarge = testing - known bugs in the packages being resolved.
Sid = unstable - unknown bugs in packages being tested.

Cannot comment on Mepis.

It depends on your individual circumstances. If you have a good internet connection (ideally broadband but minimum 56K) then all you need is the net-install version for Woody or the new installer for Sarge. The installers will download the other packages from the Debian mirrors as required. If you don't have a good connection then buy the cd's.

if you have a high speed connection the best way to install is using the sarge netinstall cd (about 100mbs). I use srage as my desktop. Very stable. More so than any other distro I have used.

I prefer MEPIS with kde 3.x, it is easier to install and use for new linux user's. You only need the install / live cd to install, then use apt-get or synatic for a GUI to get new packages or upgrades.

Debian Sid, despite being labelled "unstable" actually works very well... but I wouldn't recommend it for a Corporate Desktop, or a production environment. It's fine for everyday use as a Home Desktop, though.

I switched to Mepis from Fedora 2, I like it much better, it is just better. I am planning to try real debian sometime. Mepis just came across better to me, you may not like it.

better than fedora. Mepis does need some work on the default login screen, but the kde-look website will take care of that . Debian loaded my DSL connection properly the first time, I also like using the original apt-get, not an rpm version, there are many more packages.

I've been thinking of switching from Debian to Mepis or Ubuntu. I think Debian is one of the last distros clinging to the old /dev system and lacking scripts to support hotplugging USB devices. Wouldn't it be nice to plug a digital camera in and not spend an hour on Google finding out how to mount it?

Nice packaging system, though...

Ubuntu is a pretty awsome distro, I am using it now and the only problem I have is no 3D with mt ATI 9800XT, others have it working and easily too, I must just be one of the unlucky ones.
