First time installation

Hi all folks,

I installed Debian 3.0 on a PII-box for test purpose. Everything seemed going on smoothly, except following problems found after installation.

1) X-server could not start

At time of installation I have no idea what chip to be selected for the old graphic card - Maxi Gamer Phoenix, Voodoo Banshee resulting in X-window failed to start (I just selected S3Visage)

# startx
error popup

/var/log/XFree86.log at bottom of this posting

2) Monitor = NEC Multisync XV15+
During installation no request for entering monitor detail

3) The PC has both CDRom and CDWriter
CDRom - slave to Primary IDE
CDWriter - master to Secondary IDE

One of them could not be detected

Under /dev/
only cdrom shown, no cdrom1 indicated.

Kindly advise
1) what chip to be selected and what command shall be used to make this adjustment including monitor config.

2) How to add CDWriter/CDRom to this box

Thanks in advance.

B.R.

only cdrom shown, no cdrom1 indicated.
/dev/cdrom is just a link to an ide device, like /dev/hdc or something. Your cdrom should be /dev/hdb (if you do 'ls -l /dev/cdrom' you'll see it's linked there), and the cdrw /dev/hdc.

As for your video driver, you might try the default "vesa" driver.

Hi all,

Thanks for your advice.

X-server starts now. But following problems still remain

1) Mouse - optical mouse
Selecting /dev/input/mice, X-server can't start
Selecting /dev/psaux, X-server starts but mouse dies. Toggling between 'init3' and 'init5' impossible. Had to force-reset the PC

Now I am using a PS/2 mouse instead with /dev/psaux setting

2) Cdwriter.
# ls -l /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom -> hda
# df
showing / = /dev/hdc2
# ln -s /dev/hdb /dev/cdrom1
# ls -l /dev/cdrom1
total 0
Edit /etc/fstab
can't mount /dev/cdwriter

I am not sure whether cdrom1 has been symbolic linked to /dev/hdb. If YES how to remove it to try /dev/hdd etc.

3) # shutdown -h now
is not power down.

Kindly advise how to fix these problems. Thanks in advance.

You can execute what I call a "hammer blow" to the X server by pressing CTRL-ALT-Backspace. Kills the X server off and returns you to console mode. Useful if your mouse doesn't work (:

To remove symlinks, you can do a rm [filename]. If you place a CD in your burner, and create a mounting directory for it (e.g. /mnt/burner), you can try mount /dev/hd(abcd) /mnt/burner. That command isn't literal, switch out letters as you try. Should be a decently foolproof way to find your cdburner, since you know what your regular CD drive is already.

Is your optical mouse connected via usb, or do you have one of those usb-ps/2 interfaces setup for it?

Are you logged in as root when you issue the shutdown command? Does it simply not find the command, or does it say that its not a valid option?

EDIT: As for entering monitor details (refresh rates, etc), as root you can tweak /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and add them as appropriate.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

1) I will try to mount the CDRom and CDWriter as advised later.

2) It is an opticla USB mouse (sorry for omitting this info)
On RH under /etc/X11/XF86config
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"

then the USB mouse works. But it does not work in Debian

3) I executed "shutdown -h now" as root
It closed all programs and exited but not power down. I have to turn off the power manually.

3) On some (older) computers, it does not automatically power down after the shutdown -h now command; its a BIOS/mothoerboard issue if I remember correctly.

Did you include USB support in your kernel?

hI,

Thanks for your advice.

This box has another mobile hard drive running RH9. It powers off automatically.
Therefore I suspect I have not config Debian correctly.

It could have been a problem with having an old computer, but this isn't an old one (it worked with something else). Make sure your kernel has acpi or apm power management support. To check:
Try running 'apmd' to check for apm
Try checking for the existence of '/proc/acpi/' to check for acpi
If this doesn't work, try to load their modules:
(not sure if this is exacty how you call them)
modprobe acpi
modprobe apm
Now try to check with steps 1 & 2 again.
If that doesn't work, then try recompiling the kernel.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

# apmd
-su: apmd: command not found
# /proc/acpi
-su: /proc/acpi: No such file or directory
# modprobe acpi
modprobe: Can't locate module acpi
# modprobe apm
(no printout)
# apmd
-su: apmd: command not found
# /proc/acpi
-su: /proc/acpi: No such file or directory

I have not recompiled kernel for quite long time. Kindly advise where shall I start instead of from the very beginning ./config, make, make install. etc. Any pointer?

Thanks in advance.

'apmd' is a program, make sure it's installed. Then run it, and it will tell if your system and/or kernel supports apm. '/proc/acpi' is a folder. Do 'ls /proc' to look for it. If it doesn't exist, either your system doesn't have acpi or your kernel doesn't. Also take a look at the output of 'dmesg|more' to see if the kernel supports apm/acpi. There is a sticky regarding kernel recompiling in the Slack forum.

Hi,

Debian 3.0
==========

Now I have 'apmd' installed

# apmd
It appears that an instance of apmd is already running as process 573.
If in reality no instance of apmd is running, remove /var/run/apmd.pid.

# ls /proc/
could not find it

# dmesg | more
.....
ACPI: Subsystem revision 20030813
ACPI: Interpreter disabled.
.....
PCI: ACPI tables contain no PCI IRQ routing entries
...
etc.

Are the steps in recompiling kernel on Slack distro same as Debian.

Thanks

Take a look at this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=Google+Search
Also make sure you don't have an 'acpi=off' in your bootloader's configuration file.
