Add an entry for unstable in your sources.lst file (if you don't want to edit it manually, use the Synaptic "sources" tab and mimic the entries already present.) Reload, and install firefox. Then, if you don't want to stay in unstable, un-check that repository and reload again. That way you won't start getting all your packages from unstable!

Just to let you know, version 1.5.dfsg-4 from unstable has dependencies that aren't in testing yet. I had 1.5.dfsg-3 installed without a problem, but the latest version depends on newer libraries that aren't available in testing.

there is a firefox package in testing, it's dependiencies just aren't there yet, so it can't be upgraded as of yet. Hopefully soon....

right, but the firefox packages dependencies aren't fully satisfied. So that package won't work.

apt-get install -t testing firefox installed it for me as long as you have a testing entry in your sources.list

By the way, the backported version of Firefox 1.5 for Sarge works fine on my Etch system.
