Firefox icon missing on the desktop

i replaced iceweasle with firefox in Debian7, after the upgrade, i reconfigured the browser shortcuts on the menu and panel to point to Firefox. but the firefox icon appears to be missing from my panel and menu, in its place, it's a red X mark. How can I fix it?

also how to put firefox icon on the desktop?

create and save a file called /home/yourname/firefox.desktop
with contents changed from my pattern
Quote:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=firefox
Exec=/a/firefox/firefox %U
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=GTK;WebBrowser;Network
Icon=/a/firefox/browser/icons/mozicon128.png
NoDisplay=true
where I show pathway to executable as /a/firefox/firefox....yours is likely to be /usr/bin/firefox/firefox
where I show pathway to icon as /a/firefox/browser/icons ....yours may be /usr/share/icons

so search for your icon and executable if they are different.

if you install packagesearch (a debian package) it will show you the full pathway to files without you having to learn the cli

My icon is located at /opt/firefox/icons/mozilla.png since I installed in opt.
Also I use alacarte to add the icon.

I just checked & the icons are listed in both directories that we named, so we are both right.

I didn't mean to suggest you were wrong, Eddy; only that different install methods may result in slightly different locations.

thanks, that works!

one correction: i have to put the created firefox.desktop config file in /home/yourname/desktop/ directory, and my firefox icon is located at : /opt/firefox/browser/icons/mozicon128.png
