OK - so I reinstalled the package Iceweasel browser using APT but my question is it still possible to to follow the suggested above info via chroot or must I remove the AMD64 package of IceWeasel to be able to grab the 32 bit version.

Just don't want to crap my system.

I may be a bit late, I stumbled upon this thread while trying to resolve the same problem described by Carlwill in the first post.

I have resolved the problem now, and a chroot is NOT necessary.

All I did on an edgy amd64 system was to install ia32-libs and linux32.
Then I downloaded and installed the amd64 version of ia32-libs-gtk from
(Adress in next post, apparently I am not allowed to post links in my first post...)
After that, the 32 bit firefox from mozilla started fine(and worked fine with flash).
