Firefox 2 on Debian 64
So today I loaded Debian Etch 64 on my Intel Core 2 Duo machine. Everything is fine with the exception that Macromedia Flash still does not work on Firefox 64. I would have hoped something so simple would have been resolved over one year ago but it still appears to be an issue.
I downloaded the self containined Firefox 2 download from Mozilla.org and when I try and launch the application, I get an error that reads: Code:
cwilliams@cwilliams:~/.firefox$ sh firefox Please help! |

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/s...able&arch=i386 Or use a tool called apt-file to search into packages, even the not installed. |

I then used APT-GET to install a package called "libgtk2.0-dev" and it found it no problem but still think I am missing something from that .deb file I can't download. |
Am I reading between the lines correctly here that you installed the Sarge AMD64 version? That would be major mistake #1. 2nd mistake ... Using Firefox instead of IceWeasel.

Carlwill, with this page, you do the search _only_ ( there are two possibility: search a package, search a file in a package)
When you get the package name, you install it with whatever you want! aptitude install libgtk2.0-dev And it's probably wiser to download iceweasel. |

Debian does not contain 'Firefox' anymore....don't you read any linux news?

You didn't clear up what rickh asked above - did you install the amd64 version of Debian? I wouldn't think that would work with a core duo, as it isn't an AMD processor. I think for intel 64 bit, you want the ia64 package. Or you could just install the regular i386 packages, and not have a problem with needed 32 bit plugins.
This is the link I followed to get a 32 bit chroot for firefox on my 64 bit desktop, running unstable - http://alioth.debian.org/docman/view....html#id292205 It was written for amd64, but I don't think there should be any major difference doing it for ia64, it is the same processes on a different architecture. Please let us know what architecture you installed under. If you did somehow get amd64 installed on an intel chip, I would image that is or will become the source of many problems. Peace, JimBass |

The core2 processor does use the AMD64 (EMT64) OS, and he clearly says he installed Etch. I missed that at first. OTOH, a person antagonistic, or even ambivalent, about Debian's political positions should probably use another distro, maybe Ubuntu, until the light dawns.

OK - so I gave up Firefox 2.0.1 on AMD64 Etch. I have IceWeasel back on but it's the 64 bit version. If I remove this from the system again, how do I know if I am getting a i386 version of Iceweasel so Flash is compatable?
|
The recommended solution is to use the the 32-bit chroot as described in the JimBass link above. I don't need Flash that bad myself. Gnash and the mozilla-plugin-gnash packages (available in Sid) work very well for Flash video up to version 7.

OK - I will give that a shot and see what happens. I need version 9 so looks like that 2nd suggestion (Gnash) wont work. |

It goes for every software, not only firefox (forget about this legal problems). Prefer the package |
