Don't have time (and expertise) to read all that
But had a problem with broken X a few days ago after dist-upgrade.
Solved it by reinstalling the nvidia driver.
So if you have an nvidia driver, try changing "nvidia" to "nv" in XF86Config-4, and than startx.

Again, haven't read your log-post so this may be coplete nonsense - Please forgive me if it is

I didn't try the above.

Sometimes Gnome is starting, it is very wierd. All the icons on desktop still point to old applciations.

I tried removing and installing icewm. Also, checked, it said KDE not installed, so I installed KDE (this is funny as I had KDE before the upgrade and after
the upgrade it said all files are installed).

Then at boot, the kdm Login Scren comesup. I tried to login both as root as well as user on the following desktops: ICEWM, KDE, FAILSAFE

Please Assist.

Vijay
They all failed to loadup.

Also, please see my other thread:
k3b error messages

Perhaps these two are somehow related.

I was almost upto 74% of space for this partition. Now downto 71%
after deleting one file.

The following files/directory comeup in the home directory when I do ls -l
However, I am unable to delete them/change their permissions.

Funny thing happened.

I installed fluxbox for the first time. I expected this to be free of all the upgrade problems. This came true.

First I was able to start fluxbox, then I was able to start ICEWM and now finally KDE. But KDE looks really messedup. All the icons point to wrong previous programs. Also, when I press the menu button nothing comesup and the button stays pressed.

This entire system crashed !!! I tried to put Alt Linux on the second hard drive I have on this PC. There was a choice to erase the hard drive. I thought it will allow me to choose betwen the two drives. But NO it went in and started formatting the first drive. I stopped it but it was too late. The damage had already been done.

I had no backup. I thought I can pull thru the Upgrade. No important info. Just some hours of dowload on dialup.

After this crash, Knoppix feels great to get everything that Debian offers really fast !!!

Presently, I am posting this using Knoppix.

Warm Regards to all and thanks for all the assistance.

Jackpot !!! I tried a Knoppix HD install after repartitioning my HD and it worked. I have Knoppix 3.6, so this pretty much gives me a good system almost to what I was trying to upgrade to.

I lost a few files that I could have backed up, which means a few more days of downloads but that is OK.

This crash turned into a great learning experience in several ways.

Vijay
