FaT Debian on 7 CD's
 

I have latest relase of debian and it comes on 7 (seven!) cd's this is a mega distro,
what is there on seven cd's, any handy desktop tools?
What is default desktop manager for debian? Windows? heh

afterwards, read the Debian Configuration Post installation sticky at the top of the postings list.

1. you'll probably need 2, if not one of those cds.
2. You'd be better off with a sarge netinstall anyway.
3. Default is Gnome or KDE.

PeterOnTheNet, did you actually bothered to download ALL 7 cd images off the net? I suspect you have not the latest, I think what you've got is Debian 3.0 Woody. ;) Well, Stable release maybe, but the latest i.e. Sarge consist of 15 CDs (the largest distro to date)! You really only ever need the first CD to install Sarge via the Debian Installer (D-I) RC2.

One more thing, there's NO such thing as a default DE (e.g. GNOME, KDE, XFce) as such, what you get is a base install and the cli. Run apt-setup (part of install anyway) to configure your apt sources and you should be on way to a full blown Debian install complete with the DE/s of your choice; apps, etc.

Be prepared for lots of stuff being done via the cli (so better get to LOVE it), Debian utilities (many of whom remain cli/ncurses-based) and editing of config files hand and.

Thanks everyone,
I think I will stick to redhat. I tried I really did with debian but It did not recognised properly my graphic card,
and X server didn't started. I tried work this out, but bloody hell we have year 2005!!! Every distro I installed on my computer works why I should spend hours and hours to install Xwindows. If i want a hassle I can come back to DOS and windows 3.0. I went thru this 10 years ago and thats enough.

Hehe, don't worry... we see this all the time.

You'll spend a few months with fedora or red hat, then get agitated as they try and hide linux from you, and slowly- slowly- get drawn back to debian. You'll battle to get used to text based commands, then realise it's quicker and better half the time anyway, and in the end you'll be one of us. Mwhahaha... *manic laughter*
