Question Exiting X Server?

Hey guys, I can't seem to exit my X server. I know how to leave into the terminal, but that doesn't actually end the X server process and every time I boot into Linux, it automatically boots up x as well. How do I end the X server process or edit a file so it boots only into the terminal. Thanks!
