Hello everybody!
I switched 2 weeks ago from Suse to Debain, and don't feel myself fit enough to solve my problem. So, I would like to find out what others think about it...
A couple of days ago I tried to configure the fax modem on my laptop - to send faxes. I used eFax programm for it. Additionally I installed mgetty package. At that time my Internet connection was operating properly - I use PCMCIA card and DSL connection. (It was always easily recognized and started at boot time). After installing mgetty package I played with settings in eFax - trying several "ttyS*" devices to send my fax. It failed - I couldn't send anything...
Yetsterday I switched my machine on, and noticed in the boot messages that my network card - interface eth0 - was not recognized and enabled. Manual start of pppoeconf gave me message "eth0 not found" or something like that.
I suspect that I ruined something in the interrupts. Do you have any ideas how I could fix the problem? Additional information: usually I run my laptop on the port replicator with external mouse and keyboard connected. Yesterday I switched it on without port replicator, and couldn't use my track point - it was jumping from one position to another, imitating some clicks, etc. I never had something like this earlier - neither with Suse, nor with WinXP.
I would be glad to get any hints, any information.
Thanks for the link, it is very usefull in all senses. Unfortunatelly, it didn't really help me so far. From the log messages I see on the screen I can conclude that I destroyed the interrupts of the PCMCIA cards (my eth0 interface is the PCMCIA card). So, the hotplug cannot detect the card and, therefore, cannot use the DSL connection.
I deleted the mgetty package using dpkg commands, but it didn't help. Can anybody help me to reset the proper interrupts and enable the hotplug again? I will appreciate any assistance. To be honest, reinstallation is the very last thing I want to do!
Tnaks for all that links. Very kind, really! :-)
Unfortunatelly, I had to reinstall the system - I couldn't make it work properly. Now I decided not to touch anything further - have no time to reinstall the system each week-end.
