esd is hogging soundcard

g'day folks. i recently upgraded to sid (with gnome2.2) and i'm having difficulty getting the sound to work properly. my sound card is configured right and the correct modules are loading. when i enable the sound server startup in Applications>Desktop Preferences>Sound, gnome system events get sound, but nothing else (e.g. mozilla, xmms, gaim) do. xmms complains about some other program using the soundcard. the other program is presumably esd, but esd should in theory be controling and passing on requests from other programs. when i shut the sound server off, gaim and xmms both have sound (though not at the same time, or course). (mozilla remains mute, though, for some reason). has anyone had any problems with esd on sid? i'm using what apt says is the latest version, but is it just buggy? or is there a configuration file for esd somewhere that just needs tweaking?

incidentally, my sound card is an intel I82801CA /CAM (built-in with the dell inspiron lapton) using the module i810_audio.

any help is appreciated.

cheers...

-dave

AFAIK Mozilla does not support esd.

As for xmms, have you tried the eSound output plugin: Options -> Preferences and click the Output Plugin area to bring up a menu of options.

Sorry. don't know about gaim.
