Angry ES1868 not working with Sarge

I installed Sarge on an older machine this morning, one with a ESS1868 sound card. I've upgraded my kernel to 2.6.8, but I still can't get any sound out through the speakers, it keeps telling me there's no device, although I do have an sb.o library somewhere in the filesystem. My 2.4.x kernel won't find the card either. Can anyone tell me how to get this thing working? I saw some things in other threads that I tried, but they didn't work. I don't want to recompile the kernel if I don't have to, that's still a bit above my skill level at the moment, but I will if I have to.

thanks,
akempo

Never mind, I give up. I'll learn the kernel layout later, for now I'm going to try another distro... something easier... probably Slackware. Or if I get fed up enough, I may just use my larger hard drive and go with Mandriva on this one too.

with kernel 2.4 works with OSS - modprobe sb irq=5 dma=1
if u use alsa when run alsaconf it uses driver for es1688, but I never have had success with alsa and kernel 2.4. with 2.6 - no problem.
