errors when installing from source

i am trying to install dropbox:
https://www.dropbox.com/gs
it allready did work, but i ran into trouble, uninstalled it (besides other things) and now wanted to reinstall.

README says:
Code:
libnautilus-extension-dev
libnotify-dev
needs to be installed, both is.
followed by ./configure ; make ; make install.

after make i get:
Code:
gcc: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: No such file or directory
gcc: /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so: No such file or directory
gcc: /usr/lib/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so: No such file or directory
first i did an apt-cache search libgtk-x11. no result.
second i went for google and found this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...0.so.0-625207/
it says i oughta check:
Code:
ls -l /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

to see if /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0 actually links to /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.800.20.
to make it short: it does give that result.

short ago i screwed my package-management, so that i needed to re-install different packages, mainly lib*-dev's.
which is the one i would need to reinstall now?
i already installed libgtk2.0-dev.

thanks

mh: seems to have been libgtk2.0-0 . i reinstalled it and it seem to have worked.
i'm not that sure. will try and report back

You can use the "Search" e.g. here
http://packages.debian.org/search?se...gtk-x11-2.0.so
to find /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so

.. choosing to search for "package content"
.. it says : package = libgtk2.0-dev

And you say, it is installed now. ? Or ? ?
And also : libnautilus-extension-dev, libnotify-dev

I guess, you will just have to try again.

If further problems, tell which exact file name, you are
trying to compile. A link to the package too, please.

Version, Debian : missing too. Debian 5 Lenny ?
.....

best thing I've ran into about installing stuff from source is this post at Debian Forums
hes even got a pdf download
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=38976

Now, in short; I have been using nthis to perfect my jwm rebuilds as you just uninstall if sometings wromf instead of make uninstall etc

Its very easy to do; I have only read the 1st post!
