Error message: WARNING: All config files need .conf

Hello all.Just a heads up really.
After doing an update the package module-init-tools has been upgraded.
On the next reboot i got the following error messages:

WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-nkc, it will be ignored in a future release. WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/sound, it will be ignored in a future release. WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/oss-compat, it will be ignored in a future release

After googling the error it looks like a bug:

Just wanted to let users of Testing and Sid know about this.
Has anybody else had this error message?.
What are your thoughts on the reply to the bug report?

What are they referring to when they say that the files will be removed in the next few months? I got those warning messages too. What is the recourse? Do you rename all the files or wait for something to happen that you don't understand? Also, (just an aside) how did you get the printout of that output?

I'm not sure what they are referring to either,i was hoping someone could could shed some light on the subject....

Thanks for the links craigevil.
Looks like we will just have to wait for Debian to come up with a package that works.
It would appear the latest version from Sid also doesn't cure the problem.....
At least nothing is actually broken,just the scary warnings at boot.

I am having somewhat the same problem with upgrading. I do not have an output of the errors, but it was very similar with the ones here, a large handfull. And also this is causing me a non graphical login. Are there anyfixes for this or a certain way for the upgrade process? I know when I installed pclos I had to upgrade in a certain fashion.

I think that if you don't have the same errors it really isn't the same problem. Try to collect some of the errors you do have and post them in a separate thread. On my system the problem with the ".conf" ending on the "modprobe.d" files never effected my graphical login.

Well I have reinstalled since and have help back upgrading till I can find out what the problem is. If I do end up with this problem again after upgrading, Where would that output be?

If you cannot get a graphical login you've got to look at things like your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and maybe the contents of "/var/log/Xorg.0.log". Post a new thread with whatever symptoms you have and someone will likely be able to help you.

Yeah I compiled my own kernel from the latest debian kernel release and I am getting the same warnings. kind of scary but it is warning about stuff that I don't use any way so...

Under "man modprobe.conf" you see, that all files names in /etc/modprobe.d have to end with ".conf". Make sure all your files in this directory conform to this new rule.

As you'll see this post is pretty old.
Debian fixed this a longtime back,when Squeeze was still in Testing.
