error after install ntop

Hi,
I run a debian sarge but haven't update the kernel for a while. Today i try to install ntop package and after apt-get install notp, i was prompt not to remove kernel image. After that when I do apt-get upgrade i got another error message:
Quote:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp: Depends: initrd-tools (>= 0.1.63) but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

[Warning ntop installation give]:

You are running a kernel (version 2.6.8-2-686-smp) and attempting to remove
the same version. This is a potentially disastrous action. Not only
will /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-2-686-smp be removed, making it impossible to boot
it, (you will have to take action to change your boot loader to boot
a new kernel), it will also remove all modules under the directory
/lib/modules/2.6.8-2-686-smp. Just having a copy of the kernel image is not
enough, you will have to replace the modules too.

I repeat, this is very dangerous. If at all in doubt, answer
no. If you know exactly what you are doing, and are prepared to
hose your system, then answer Yes.
Remove the running kernel image (not recommended) [No]? no
dpkg: error processing kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: initrd-tools: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you request:
kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp depends on initrd-tools (>= 0.1.63).
Removing initrd-tools ...
Errors were encountered while processing:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

*** I have a bad feeling taht if i go ahead do apt-get upgrade, there will be problem for reboot. Can anyone advice me what to fix this problem and how to get ntop working?

ps: the hardware is old dell4400 poweredge. I have been running the 2.6.8-2-686-smp for years, although it was upgrade from 2.4 long ago.

You can try just installing the newest kernel from the repositories, then letting it uninstall the old one after you reboot into the new kernel by running aptitude upgrade.

If you want to keep sarge, make sure your /etc/apt/sources.list points to either "sarge" or "oldstable" (since Etch is currently stable). Then apt-cache search kernel-image-2.6.8. If I remember right it was kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp.
