Well. in my case the option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" cannot be changed.
When I change it to "false", save it, look again, its still saved, but when I restart 'x' the scroll-wheel doesn't work.
When I look again, it says "true" again..

So there is a file which overwrites my changes.
Any suggestions?

And now the file is saved even after restart x, but the mouse-wheel still does not work....

Re: your reply to my reply... don't be fooled, I'm as new to Linux as you. But between n00bs, reading and patience are your friends. As you say, do it wrong but pay attention so that you learn how to do it right. It's very cool that you have so many systems to administer, and the more time you spend learning, the less your administrative efforts will be.

To your ongoing mouse woes: You still haven't mentioned it, so exactly what kind of mouse do you have? If it doesn't support the ImPS/2 protocol, then of course that won't work. Consider doing a Google search for your model and see if it supports ImPS/2. (It may even be written on the mouse somewhere.)

Also, double and triple check that there is agreement between the identifiers in Section "Input Device" and Section "Server Layout".

Sometimes it's not what you think that is causing the actual trouble. For instance, when I deleted the line containing "CorePointer": it took me a while to figure out that it was that and not something else.

If you can't figure it out, boot your machine with a Knoppix disk. Test to see if your mouse scrolls as you expect, then if it does look at /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in Knoppix. You can write down or print what Knoppix uses and see if that helps you figure it out in Debian.

Inbetween my last post, and your new one, i have reinstalled with kernel 2.6, no difference.
The annoying overdone safety made me change back to 2.4 again.
I totaly repartitioned the drive, separated my /home to its own partition, and making room for frugal install of DamnSmallLinux (complete OS, 47MB) which uses a kind of KLik Protocol-like install-upgrade method....in which the image is copied to the HD, like Knoppix..

Had to go through everything 3 or 4 times till it was to my likings.
The mouse-wheel is still not fixed, but I will try your suggestion when done with the necessary changes, which take some time....

But I will surely post here when the job is done..

Well,

Finaly i have all things working: wdm, instead of xdm, wmanager (updated wmanagerrc), and now all windowmanagers are listed, and chooseable, before logon. Nice side-effect: Able to shut down, instead of waiting untill 'reboot' and quickly turn off the switch.

I also tried to use the mouse in the usb-port,(I used a ps2 adaptor at first) and scrolling with the wheel is a fact!

Frugal install on DSL, adapt the GRUB to it, and it boots fine!

So a happy monkey shows up, as promised....

Thanks to everybody who tried to help me out, or pushed me in the right direction.

I love it when a plan comes together.

The mouse wheel working is not a direct result of using USB, but glad to know you've now got access to that most indispensable asset to modern computing. ;)

:D

I agree, because if I use the ps2 adaptor, it still doesn't scroll. Another strange thing is, when i use the usb port in DSL, the mouse doesn't work at all!
Men and mice, it puzzles me, so there will come a time that i will figure this issue out! But for now there are, luckily for me, new problems to solve. The weather does not allow me to repaint my camper, so all the pc's keep me busy, and, since my linux addiction, the house has not been cleaned as usual, more: 'The French Way.

...and they lived happily ever after...:p

And so on, and so forth....

Well, amazing little distro, DSL, it remembered not recognising the proper usb-mouse, and the next time I booted up, another was choosen: And this time the right one!
So this litle prob. is also solved to my convenience..

Besides that, I think usb-mice, belong in usb-ports. So i will not bother the adaptor-scrollwheel-faillure again. I donot have to use it, and now everything is at my likings anyway..

Yes DSL, is realy something special, anyone who reads this, and did not try it: You should realy give it a try! Especialy for older hardware this is a second life. The filosophy behind it is to my likings also, why drag more around than you need....

Solong..
