dpkg broken...

I cannot update my system !!

I had a bad shutdown, and some files were recovered after system maintenance (fsck) to /lost+found. Most of the files are unreadable, but the sytem seems to boot and run ok.

However, when i try to apt-get upgrade it fails.

When i 'dpkg -l' i get the error below: (what's wrong?)

dpkg-query: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 28397 package `libexpat1-dev':

Either scan for diffs between the ~/available and ~/available-old file at that line in question and edit where and if needed, or replace the entire file outright with the backup and see if that ceases the error message.

Thanks for the tip..!

anyway, too late. I am quite sure that the 'available' file is not complete, as the other day i fixed the error by chopping off the last entry (where the file had been cut off). But now both 'available' and 'available-old' are exactly the same (i ran diff - and the sizes are exact..). So the system has backed up a bad file, somehow, in the interim.

Shouldn't there be a way to rebuild that file? I googled, but no luck so far.
