disable kernel-mode-setting (KMS)

hi

I have squeeze installed on the old hardware DELL GX260.
Howto disable completely kernel-mode-setting (KMS) on squeeze?
I've tried to add /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset"

and change in /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf:

options i915 modeset=0

but I get problems with X windows from the Gnome.

Obviously you can ignore the first part.

What gpu are you on? Disabling kms while using an opensource driver which depends on it (i915, nouveau or radeon) is a bad idea.
