Directory Ownership and Permission Changes Not Staying

Hi there --

We are running Knoppix 5.1, based on Debian 4.0, on one of our servers and whenever we try to change the owner and the permissions of one of the directories as root or sudo user, they will eventually revert back to their original owner and permissions.

Quote:
Original:
drwx------ ahk users archive

Desired:
drwxrwxrwx root root archive
What could be causing this, and how can it be corrected? Thanks.

Hi there --

Thanks for your reply. The commands that are being used to change the ownership and permissions of the directory in question are shown below:

root user:
Code:
# chown root:root archive
# chmod 777 archive
sudo user:
Code:
$ sudo chown root:root archive
$ sudo chmod 777 archive
The server has not been rebooted in about a month.

Do you anly want to change the directory or all the files in it to ?
To change all the files to:
Code:
chown -R root:root archive
chmod -R 777 archive
Code:
eventually revert back to their original owner and permissions.
I don't understand this.
Do the changes take effect, and vanish after a while, or don't the changes take effect?

What is the filesystem of archives ?

Hi there --

I haven't tried the commands in question with the -R option, but I can certainly give it a shot. The changes seem to go into effect, and then
disappear after a while. The filesystem type is ReiserFS.
