desactivating X server

hello everyone,
as i use my debian PC as a server, so i don't need X server running so how to switch it off (because it save memory when it's off), i'm not talking about uninstalling it because sometimes i'll need it (to fix something or to browse somewhere)
BTW the runlevel 1 is not a solution because linux kill all terms after boot with it

Uninstall the display managers you might have installed (kdm, gdm or xdm) That way X won't start up automatically, but you can still start up X when you need to by startx.
Example: uninstall kdm:
Code:
apt-get remove kdm

Yes I am sure. The display manager is what is responsible for bringing up the graphical login stuff. When you uninstall the display managers, there is nothing that will bring up X automatically at system startup and you need to login at a virtual console ("text mode thingy") and execute startx to start up X manually.

Display managers (kdm, gdm, xdm) are not to be confused with window managers (fluxbox, twm, fvwm, sawfish, icewm, ...) nor with desktop environments (GNOME, KDE, ...).

To uninstall whatever display managers you have, execute all these three commands to make sure you don't have any of the above mentioned display managers left.
Code:
apt-get remove kdm
apt-get remove gdm
apt-get remove xdm
