Dependency Problem in Sarge

I have installed Debian Sarge and am "building up" the system. The PC currently has Win2K and Mandrake 10.1 in separate IDE drives. Sarge is on a SATA drive.

I have successfully installed and updated a number of packages but an encountering problems with others. Here is an example:

I want to install k3b. Using Synaptic Package Manager I mark k3b for install. Immediately I am told that a large number of packages will be uninstalled. These include KDE, most of the ALSA stuff and a lot of others. Not really acceptable!

Aptitude does not offer k3b. It only offers k3blibs. I did not try to select it in case it went ahead and tried to mess up my system. KPackage also does not offer k3b but offers k3blibs and will uninstall a number of files although not as many as Synaptic would if I select k3b.

I have the tar.gz file for k3b but don't want to fall back on this except as a last resort

Is this something I can fix?

.

Do you have sources for Debian unstable and testing enabled? If so, you may need to upgrade all of KDE to get the latest (unstable/sid) version of k3b. I think the latest k3b depends on KDE 3.4.x instead of 3.3.x To upgrade KDE (assuming you have Debian unstable sources in /etc/apt/sources.list), try running:
Code:
apt-get -t unstable install kdemultimedia
I don't know why, but the kdemultimedia metapackage seems to grab all the kde 3.4.x stuff, even when the "kde" metapackage does not. You can then run:
Code:
apt-get -t unstable install k3b
It should work. Post back if it doesn't. I just did this upgrade myself recently and I can double check what I did. KDE 3.4 works fine from unstable and I am running k3b 0.12.4a

Thanks, doing it now. 195MB to download and the connection is pretty slow so it looks like an overnighter.

I'll report back on the results.

It worked, thanks.

Actually the ability to upgrade KDE is one of the reasons I switched to Debian from Mandrake. You have to buy a 4th CD to do this and there were many eports of problems when people tried to upgrade.

I now have KDE 3.4
