dependency problem

hello !
i'm trying to upgrade my debian unstable installation, but i have this problem:
it tries to upgrade arts, but the new arts version requires libarts1c2a and i have installed libarts1c2.
so it wants to remove many packages, which i don't.

how can i remove libarts1c2 and install libarts1c2a without any dependency problem ?

If you use dpkg to do the job, you shoud be able to use --ignore-depends arts

You can also force things to not upgrade in your /etc/apt.conf.

Note, though, that things may not work as before. Alternatively, if you think that apt-get or dpkg are making a mistake, notify the developers!

Finally, you can use --no-remove with apt-get to prevent problems when setting up apt-get update && apt-get upgrade as a cronjob.

I have the same problem.

The provious answer seems to imply that upgrading could be risky so I'm going to wait and see if the problem gets resolved.

Incidentally I have been getting a lot of sound server crashes and suspect that all is not well with arts in its current form.

Yes, upgrading while forcing dependencies can cause compatibility problems. You are overriding a mechanism (dependency checking) that is designed to prevent these problems, so what do you expect?

By the number of complaints I have read from Debian Unstable users about apt wanting to remove many packages, I take it that the current version of apt that is in use in unstable has a serious bug.
