dell d610 won't start x after 2.6 upgrade

under 2.4, x starts fine. I upgraded to 2.6, now x won't start. the system is debian sid/sarge running on a dell c610 laptop with a radeon mobility m6. If i look at dmesg, it doesn't seem like anything is wrong. I compiled the 2.6.4 kernel from scratch and included everything in the kernel that I needed without many modules. All the old modules still load, but most say <module> has already been loaded. I figure once I get 2.6 working properly I will worry about getting rid of that. I tried compiling the radeon card as a module in case x was looking for a module but no luck.

If I look at XFree86.0.log, I see:

XSERVTransSocketOpen: socket() failed for local
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for local
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for local/egs-debian:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for local

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already ru$

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to submit@bugs.debian.org.

any ideas?

thanks,
Eric
