Debian4. Won`t connect to web sites.

Iceweasel and wget can`t find any web sites!
The ppp box shows both in and out bytes when
I try to connect. Have Slackware and sarge on
this computer and they work OK. Don`t know
where to look.

is your DNS configured ?

Quote:
default@debian:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 192.168.2.1
Quote:
default@debian:~$ ping www.google.com
PING www.l.google.com (64.233.167.99) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from py-in-f99.google.com (64.233.167.99): icmp_seq=3 ttl=241 time=30.1 ms
64 bytes from py-in-f99.google.com (64.233.167.99): icmp_seq=4 ttl=241 time=31.4 ms

4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3010ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 30.122/31.607/32.714/0.980 ms
if your DNS is configured you will be able to resolve site names into IP addresses..

if your DNS is not configured you will have to KNWO the IP address of a site to reach it.
you can try browsing to google by putting that IP address as the URL in your browser.
if the site loads then DNS is your issue

Can we see what's in the /etc/network/interfaces file? It sounds like you may not have an iface line with dhcp enabled.

The resolv.conf numbers are there and correct.
I tried to ping and got -unknown host.
interfaces: auto lo
iface lo inet loopback.
I`m using Sarge on the same computer right now
and it mentions dsl-provider but I don`t have dsl. I see a package called ppp-udeb. I don`t have that on Sarge. Would I need it for the 2.6 kernel?

Well....I removed all ppp packages and deleted
all directories and files...then I downloaded
new packages and installed. Ran pppconfig.
Still can`t connect to websites. I ran puppylinux
live cd....typed in a few details and was on the
internet. My connection is OK! Sarge connects
OK on this computer. What is it about Debian4?

Can you try what farslayer said:

ping www.google.com

and then

ping 64.233.167.99

And how do you activate your ppp connection?

Posting this from Sarge in the same computer as Etch.
# ping www.google.com Unknown host
# ping 64.233.167.99 64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=42 ttl=243 time=xxxms (this line continues
to repeat)
# poff -a ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable (this
line repeats and I`m unable to stop it)
I tried iceweasel(before running poff) "iceweasel
can`t find the server at www.google.com.
I connect to the isp with # pon

Ok pon is the right way to do it.
You clearly have a DNS problem.
It would be interesting to see your /etc/resolv.conf AFTER you do the pon.

There is no resolv.conf file. Sarge has one.
There are seven files in the Sarge ppp directory
that are not in etch ppp. I copied resolve.conf
to etch ppp but no change.

Hello
I also have a problem with my connection. I have installed Debian 4 Etch and finally I got connected using the #pon command .I can see My serial modem is turned on. But nothing comes out in my web browser.
I'm waiting...and after 4 minutes I turned the modem off using #poff. I went to see the messages file, and I read 0 bytes sent , 2568 bytes received. Connected for 4 minutes. I tried a few times but the same results.Nothing comes out in the browser
I did not have this problems while using the Puppy Linux distro with the same modem.
If anybody have any idea how to solve this I would be so happy to hear what to do
Thanks

Hi, i had the same problem with debian 3.x and with ubuntu 6.06 i could browse for 15 minutes and then not anymore but chat programs could continue working, then i got ubuntu 7.04 and i could browse and do everything without problems, so i got debian 4 and started comparing the configuration files (configured with pppoeconf in all distributions), yet couldn't find any major differences. with debian 4 i can browse for 15-30 minutes like ubuntu 6.06 and then not anymore. what could ubuntu do that works better in these cases? i run a d-link router by the way, and i think its not the ipv6 problem because i shut it off in every distro.

You have to compare for the exact same kernel.
If it's not the case, copy the debian kernel to the ubuntu root and see if your buntu still works.

PPP sometimes sends echo to maintain the line even if it's idle.
Putting debug level to maximum and looking at the log would be the first step.

Seems like there really is a bug when I see so many people.
You could ask support on the bugs.debian.org also but maybe first investigate a bit on your side.
