I recently upgraded (security release and backports update) my Debian Squeeze installation. Everything went fine. When I rebooted, the upgrade had changed the default OS selection on the Grub Boot Menu. I missed it originally and it went to a selection whose NVidia driver had not yet been setup for the upgraded Linux keral. Many of the tools I have thusfar learned were unavailable to me. I rebooted and manually selected the version of the OS that I knew would work.

My question is this:
How do I reconfigure the default OS selection in the Grub Boot Menu? At one time, all it took was to edit a single text file. When I looked this time, there were warnings about not editing the grub.cfg file due to the fact that it was automatically generated. I have searched around and have not found anything that points me in the direction I need to go, at least in a way that was clear enough to understand that it was the direction in which I need to go.

You'll need to edit /etc/default/grub and change the GRUB_DEFAULT= entry.
Then run update-grub after,as you will see when you open the file with your text editor of choice.

Thank you for the information. After reading your post, I examined the contents of the /etc/default/grub file and did indeed find the "GRUB_DEFAULT=" line. This variable is currently set to "0". I Googled the settings for this parameter, and found the information I needed to setup the GRUB configuration as it should be.
