Unhappy Debian Sarge 3.1 LXF70 XWindows fails to start - Missing symbols

Hi Guys

I've installed Debian Sarge 3.1 from the CD images supplied on
Linux Format LXF70 (Image CDs burned from magazing DVD).

Target platform is a P III 800 with 128 MB ram

The install went ok. But when I fire up the system and login as root
Xwindows falls over complaining that it is missing symbols.
An declares that it fails to find a screen.

I have executed xf86config from the command prompt under root
to reconfigure Xwindows.

I have tried a number of alternative PCI display cards, and matched them by manufacturer and specification. I have tried all sorts of configurations
from standard VGA upward.

Q1 : Is this a known issue ?
Q2 : Any idea what the cause of the problem may be ?

All assistance appreciated

This may not be related to the graphics card at all but to the screen resolution. The error will be reported in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. To examine the file do cat /var/log/XFree86.0.log | more (note the log file name ..0.log is a zero). If it cannot find the correct display resolution you will probably need to get the vsync and hsync values for your monitor from the manual or the manufacturer.
The Debian way to reconfigure the x-server is to use the following root command;

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

The settings are contained in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
