Faulty bootloader

I suspected the boot loader, so must be a hiccup in the script.

When I've got more download allowance, (next month), I will make sure to try and build a gnome desktop from the scripts.
(The original image I had was a ready built download.)

I like to get 'under the bonnet', so am quite happy to keep on tinkering.

In the meantime, I will look around the rest of the Debian Forum, in case I can help anyone, or pick up something useful.

re lack of sound

I've just been back to this.

Just replaced Windows 7 with Squeeze (64bit) - no sound. Perfect under Win7.

Using Knoppix 6.5 (32bit); I get sound!
It loads:- snd_hda_intel snd_hda_codec_hdmi snd_hda_codec_realtek

My HP G62 loads:-
snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_hda_codec_intelhdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_h wdep,snd_pcm,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device

So, I'm wondering if it is snd_hda_codec_intelhdmi that's the problem. Tried renaming it snd_hda_codec_intel_hdmi and modprobe it in, but it wouldn't go, so it's not the name that's wrongly spelled.

Also, Installed Squeeze (64bit) on my Advent 12", same problem, no sound, again intel hda.

Have now tried 'my' pendrive Debian Live on both laptops and got no sound on either.

re no sound

Sorry, forgot to mention. I don;t have /dev/dsp /dev/mixer or /dev/audio.

re no sound

Have just run, from a usb hdd, 32bit Squeeze on my Advent and got sound.

It loaded snd_hda_codec_si3054, so I booted back into 64bit Squeeze, which is installed, and added in snd_hda_codec_si3054, but still no sound.

So, I'm guessing this is a 64bit sound problem......

Just checking, you have got your audio settings setup properly haven't you? Something isn't muted by mistake by any chance?

I think, but I may be wrong, you probably have some minor dependency issues. I realise you have used your bandwidth quota so when you have some again try this out and it may help with issues like this. In your 64 bit install go to your terminal and type in
Code:

dpkg --get-selections > installed-software
This will write it down to a txt file that you'll probably find in your home folder. Now do the same in your 32 bit install and copy the 32 bit file to a flash drive so you can use it on your main install.

Now install a program called Meld, you will find it in Synaptic or just type
Code:

apt-get install meld
in a terminal. Open Meld and load both lists, you will be able to see the differences between the two installs. This may point you to any debs you are missing that may be causing your sound issue.

re no sound

Thanks for that nugget of info, have written it down in my notebook, (just in case I lose this thread).

I just made sure I was in the audio group on the Advent, then ran alsamixer again, and found that I HAD missed the speaker setting (Doooh!). Sound on this one now working.

Will run dpkg --get-selections on it for comparison.

Again, thanks for the help, appreciated.

re no sound

As I have a full dvd distro of Squeeze (64bit); the reason I've no more download allowance.
I installed & ran meld, easier to use than diff(3). Did not find anything significant between Advent 64bit, which now has sound, HP 64bit pendrive, & HP 32bit usb hdd.

So I went back to square 1 & retried both pendrive 64bit live & usb hdd 32bit install on both the Advent & HP G62.

Results:- Both play sound on the Advent. Neither play sound on the HP G62.

Must have got myself confused somewhere along the line, because I thought I had got sound with the 32bit on the HP!

My apologies for my confusion, this 61 year old brain obviously had a 'senior moment'.

So, the outcome is that it must be a hardware issue with the HP G62 soundcard.

I will now take this up on the main Debian forum under a different heading.

Again thanks for your help.

You are very welcome Fatmac, it's great to see people having a go no matter what their age.

Your 61 year old brain is only a little older than my 59 year old brain that will turn 60 in February.

This kind of thing is good for us. Folks over 55, "they" say, do not get enough mental challenges in the way of learning new things.

I think you need to learn new things to make up for the things you forget or something.

"They" also say we do not get enough exercise. I would like "them" to come out and try and keep up on an all day gather of cattle over many square miles of pasture here in Montana.

Be sure to have FUN with all this.
