Debian Lenny on AMD64?

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi All,

I have a 64-bit Athlon system. I am wondering if I can install the Lenny AMD64 architecture and run the system without problems.

Yes I have Googled, but most information I see seems to be a bit outdated. Some information says not all drivers are available, some programs need to be run in 32-bit mode, OpenOffice doesn't run in 64-bit. But I also saw that "Lenny fully supports 64-bits", which would be wonderful of course.

Can someone please share his recent experiences?

Thanks
jlinkels

Works fine ... Drivers are generally better than 32-bit. Only issue is that you have to use Konqueror instead of Iceweasel to see internet Java applets.

Works fine on my Intel-based laptop. Quite solid.
Use nspluginwrapper for Adobe flash. Install ia32-libs for multi-arch support (I run Google Earth.) For java, I have sun-java6-jre from debian-multimedia repo, which runs Limewire fine. Never noticed missing applets in Iceweasel--maybe a good thing. In fact, I want for nothing. Highly recommended.

Yeah.. it works! Great!

Flash works in Konqueror and Iceweasel with nspluginwrapper as indicated. Right away!

Unfortunately Opera is my standard browser, and that proved to be more difficult. I installed Opera 9.5 AMD64 beta1 build 1643. Running Flash is possible, but you have to do some magic as outlined in this thread

Opera is running stable, but it has some issues concering layout etc. I haven't checked mplayer etc. Still have to get the sound working on this MB.

This system runs an AMD64 at 1800 MHz (Dunno what the processor type is for this speed, 2800+ or so?) and it really feels very fast. Just have to add some more memory.
