Question Debian isn't starting anymore need help!

hello

I updated all my packages with apt-get

and it updated all of them but it asked me if i want to update my kernel
and i sayd no, didn't wanted to risk my Linux ...

but now it isn't starting anymore ...

I got this error on booting

VFS: Cannot open root device "301" or 03:01
Please append a correct "root=" boot option.
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01

so i wanted to rerun lilo and tryd that with Knoppix

but it won't let me change the lilo.conf
and i can't run Lilo, it says i don't have premission

but i tryd to login as root with "su"
but nothing happens and i get the same errors

can anyone help??

The current knoppix mounts all partitions "nodev" read only. To correct this open a console and run:

$ su
<Enter>
# umount /mnt/hdxx
# mount /dev/hdxx /mnt/hdxx
# chroot /mnt/hdxx
# /sbin/lilo -v

That will rerun lilo. Here, "hdxx" corresponds to your root partition. If you want to edit your lilo.conf before doing chroot and running lilo, after doing the last mount command above, run:

# kedit /mnt/hdxx/etc/lilo.conf

That should bring up lilo.conf in kedit with root privileges and read/write capability. The trick here is to remount the partition as root using the "/dev/hdxx" and "/mnt/hdxx" in your mount command.

use a linux cd, boot and remount your partitions and recompile the kernel(with appropriate file systems you have : ext2, ext3...)
